Dr. Lawrence R. Flake has taught in the Church Education System for 57 years. His most recent assignment was as a professor of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. In 2014, he retired from BYU-Provo and was called on a mission to teach religion classes at BYU-Hawaii where he is presently teaching each Winter Semester with his wife, Elaine. He earned his master’s degree and doctorate from BYU in religious education and has served as a teacher and an administrator for the Church Educational System in New York, Washington, D.C., Montana, Utah, and Hawaii. He has given talks and lectures throughout the United States and has traveled extensively abroad, including a six-month assignment to the BYU Jerusalem Center. Professor Flake has written for various periodicals, journals, and encyclopedias. He is the author of eight books, including his latest, Prophets and Apostles of the Last Dispensation. He has served in many callings in the Church including six years as a Regional Representative of the Twelve, and for three years as president of the Missouri Independence Mission. He and Elaine, who has also taught religion classes at BYU, are the parents of eight children and the grandparents of 40.
