Your health is important no matter what situation you’re in, and an LDS cruise from Cruise Lady is no exception. Our LDS vacations are very safe and thoroughly planned, but in any situation where you’re leaving your natural atmosphere and seeing many new parts of the world – plus spending lots of time in climates or accommodations your body isn’t used to – can naturally put stress on the body.
Luckily, keeping your health in mind on one of our trips is a simple task, one that can be accomplished without any detriment to your overall enjoyment. Here are a few of our best tips.
If you’re concerned about any trip health elements, consult your doctor and healthcare provider in advance. Ask about changing eating and sleeping habits, plus any stress your body may be at risk for in a new climate. Ask about medications or any ongoing conditions you’re managing.
In addition, make sure you’re up to date on vaccinations before your trip. You may be in contact with people from several areas of the world, and basic vaccines for things like measles, mumps and rubella can keep you from a major issue.
Whenever possible, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This will help prevent norovirus, a condition that can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Make sure to take at least 20 seconds while washing – some recommend singing the “Happy Birthday” song at a normal speed. Bring your own sanitizer on the trip for cases where there’s no soap and water available.
Where possible, exercise when you can. Many of our ships have fitness facilities on board, and even 30 minutes a day of cardio work can help keep the body and immune system in top shape.
It’s easy to overindulge on food and drink, especially with unlimited options available. Too much here can weaken the immune system, and can mess with blood sugar levels as the body is already going through other large changes. Always take food-safety precautions and avoid any questionable options, especially at buffets.
In certain parts of the world, mosquitos can carry severe diseases. If you’re on a cruise in one of these areas (something you’ll be informed of well in advance), bring along effective insect repellant.
Down similar lines, general skin care is important. You’ll spend a lot of time outdoors, so sunscreen and skin protection are vital.
